The Abacos: An Animal Lovers Paradise

Calling all animal whisperers! The Bahamas is filled with some of the world’s most unique animals and creatures, both on land and sea. The Abacos in particular, boasts a large variety of unique animals that are must-sees on your Mast Charters vacation.

  • Green Turtle Cay – True to its name, Green Turtle Cay is home to the endangered Green Turtle. Though the species is currently at risk, visitors are welcome to swim beside them as they waddle around this plentiful cay. Grab a snorkel and some lettuce to get up-close-and-personal with these gentle creatures as they gracefully glide through the crystal blue waters of the Abacos.
  • No Name Cay – Also known as “Piggyville”, No Name Cay is located on the southern tip of the Abacos. Here you will find wild pigs, big and small, roaming free. Similar to their cousins on Great Exuma, no one knows for sure how these domesticated pigs got to the island, as they are not native to the region. Even so, they attract a lot of attention from visitors and locals alike. Swim, feed and play with these pigs, and you may just make some new friends! (Pro tip: If you want to be popular with No Name Cay’s smallest residents, bring along some fresh fruits and veggies as treats—which is totally encouraged to help support this nonindigenous wildlife.)
  • Manjack Cay – On the Northern tip of the island you will find the mystical Manjack Cay. Here you will encounter stingrays, Lemon Sharks, Nurse Sharks, and more. Beware! You will have to make your way down a creek during high tide in order to get to the heart of this cay. Luckily, you will be met by an unforgettable view and unique sea life post-trek. Similar to No Name Cay, bringing treats like squid will attract most creatures your way! Fear not though—these species pose little threat to humans and are very social due to frequent encounters with visitors from around the world.

If that’s not enough, be sure to stop by one of the many national parks in the area. Our favorite is Fowl Cays Land and Sea Park, a National Park that protects a small portion of the shoreline that is rich in unique sea life.

It comes to no surprise then that this stretch of paradise is often referred to as the “friendliest island in the Abacos”. So what are you waiting for? Check out our full Abacos itinerary here to book your getaway: https://mastcharters.com/abacos-bahamas/.
