Pig Beach: Where Pigs Can’t Fly, But Surely Can Swim

If you’re planning on visiting the Bahamas, swimming with a certain animal is a MUST. No, we’re not talking about dolphins or sea turtles, we’re talking about pigs

Here’s everything you need to know about this popular vacation experience, exclusive to the Exumas

No one actually knows where the pigs originated from.

There are several theories as to how the pigs ended up on the island, but due to the lack of evidence, no one can say for sure. Some believe the pigs adapted to life on the island after surviving a shipwreck, while others believe they were abandoned by their owners who once lived on Big Major Cay (the real name of Pig Beach).

They’re friendly and ready to welcome you to the island!

One question frequently asked is if the pigs are friendly. Yes! The pigs are some of the Bahamas’ sweetest animals and are great hosts that would love to welcome you to shore. They’ll often swim right up to the boats and greet newcomers, hoping to receive some treats in return for their hospitality!

Pig Beach is completely uninhabited by humans.

There aren’t any homes, buildings, or restaurants of any sort on the island. Pig Beach is run and operated strictly by these wild pigs, without the interference of human establishments.

You’re likely to come across every pig that calls this place home!

Some may expect hundreds of swimming pigs to inhabit the island, but in reality, there are only around 20 pigs. This means that visitors often have the chance to meet the entire Exuma pig family!

They should only be fed natural foods.

If you decide to bring some snacks for these little islanders, please select natural foods, like produce, that are easy for them to digest! The pigs are sure to be appreciative of anything and everything that they’re given to eat, so please make sure it’s something that won’t upset their tummies!
