The 411 on the BVI

You think you know, but do you really? The British Virgin Islands, not to be confused with the U.S. Virgin Islands, are located in the Caribbean Sea and are made up of over 50 individual isles! Although both groups of islands aren’t too far apart geographically, the split in their colonial rule over time has shaped their differences and has created a distinct kind of experience for each.

If you opt for our British Virgin Islands voyage, there are a few things you should know! For starters, the BVI is the quieter side of the Caribbean, with fewer resorts, tourists and high-rises getting in your way. In contrast to their U.S.-owned counterpart, the British Virgin Islands offer fewer amenities, well-known brands, and chain restaurants. When we dock, you’ll enjoy a slice of heaven with only relaxation in mind (don’t worry, there’s still plenty of rum). In fact, only about 15 of the 60 islands in the BVI are inhabited, leaving a majority of the region pure and untouched by heavy tourism or pollution.

Despite being a separate entity from the U.S. Virgin Islands, the BVI may not seem too foreign to American travelers—the currency of the BVI is the United States Dollar and the official language is English! Yet, a passport is still required to step on land. It is a British territory after all! In fact, British Virgin Islanders are classified as having full British citizenship and according to the Government of the British Virgin Islands, “are deemed to be citizens of the EU as well.”
