Travel Tips: Your Perfect Trip to The Bahamas

Entry & Exit Requirements

U.S. citizens must present a valid U.S. passport for entry into the Bahamas and re-entry into the United States for trips up to 90 days. There are no extra travel vaccinations needed or tourist visa required. You may have to show Bahamian officials proof of anticipated departure. See here for more information.

Best Time To Visit

Weather in the Bahamas is nearly perfect all year-round, but the high season is from December to February since the weather is dry and the islands are the perfect escape from the cold. For more information on when to visit, check out our guide.

Language

The official language of the Bahamas is English although many speak Bahamian English, a Creole dialect. In this dialect, some African words such as “yinna” for you (plural) are used. There are some different pronunciations from island to island but generally, you shouldn’t have any problems striking up conversations with the friendly locals.

Currency

If you are traveling from the U.S., you won’t need to change your money. The Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the U.S. dollar and both are accepted throughout the islands. It is recommended to carry small bills with you so that it is easier to get change back from cabs, marketplaces, etc. Credit Cards are accepted throughout most of the islands but some smaller islands may only accept cash.

You can find ATM’s at airport terminals, casino, and banks on Nassau, Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island, and most tourist locations. ATM’s are harder to find on smaller islands so plan accordingly.

Tipping

Tip just as you would at home. A standard tip for service such as a taxi driver or server is 15% and porters typically get tipped $1-$2 per bag. Some restaurants and hotels will automatically include gratuity so be sure to check your bill.

What To Eat

There is something for everyone on the islands from fine dining to barbecue shacks. If you want to try authentic Bahamian food, skip the resort restaurants and eat local. Must try dishes include: deep-fried conch, jerk chicken, johnnycake, and fish chowders. If you are in the Abacos Islands, try these restaurants.

What To Wear

Casual summer attire is fine during the day all year round but pack a jacket for cooler evenings from December to January. Nicer establishments, such as casinos and restaurants, may require men to wear a jacket in the evening.

Always cover up after the beach or pool. Bahamians are modest people and wearing swimsuits on the streets can be considered inappropriate.
